Moving to a new home is a very exciting step in your life. It can also be a very tedious process. Whether this is your first move or you have moved many times before, without a proper plan, your move will be a lot more difficult than it needs to be. Fear not! The professional team at Econo Moving & Storage have gone through countless moves and have picked up a few tips on how to make your move go smoothly.

Start Early

Once you have decided to move, you should start to at least plan something out. You don’t have to start packing right away, but you should figure out how many boxes you will need, what items you plan on moving or throwing away, and pack up seasonal items you won’t be using for a while. Every week you should do a little bit of packing. Start with your least essential items and work your way up until everything is packed and ready to go on your moving day.

Label Everything

When you are getting ready to box things up, label the box first before you start to fill it. The last thing you want to do is end up with 20 identical boxes and have no idea where they go. You can label them with a marker, colour coded tape, or “moving” tape which is both labelled with the room it is going to and a unique colour to help identify where it goes on site.

Take the Opportunity to Purge

When you move the last thing that you want to do is move items you have no intention of keeping anyway. Go through your belongings and decide what needs to be thrown away, donated, and possibly sold. There are lots of great places online to sell or trade your unwanted items, and you can also hold a yard sale depending on the time of year.

Pack Essentials Together

Pack one box with all of your essentials. Your toiletries, pyjamas, change of clothes, towels, and bedding so that you can easily unpack everything you need for the next day instead of rummaging through all your boxes to find everything. It is also a good idea to either make a separate box with easy meals or to splurge and get some pizza on the day of the move.

Check on Rules

If you are moving in or out of a condo or apartment, they may have rules about what days and times you can complete your move. Check with the office and schedule a time to use the elevator well in advance and double check a week before your move to make sure that there has been no conflict and that they are prepared.

Keep Valuables Safe

You do not want your most important valuables to get lost or damaged during a move, and it is always a smart idea to have things like medication, paperwork, and passports kept secure on your person. Purchase a lock box or firebox to store your jewelry, medication, passports, and important paperwork and keep this in the locked trunk of your car on the day of the move. You will have peace of mind knowing where these items are and they will not get left behind or on the moving truck.

Pets & Kids

If you have very young children and pets then you really do not want them around during the move. For one, it really is not fun for them, but more importantly, they can get seriously injured or end up getting into things that could hurt them. The best thing to do is hire a babysitter or get a family or friend to take them for the day and bring them to the new house once the move has been completed and they can enjoy their new home with you.
